Upcycled Frame to Craft Storage

Upcycled Frame Found in Trash turned Craft Paint Storage

I have no problems digging in the trash… there I said it. Ha! OK, maybe not digging, but if I see something in plain sight that I think I can transform, I’ll take it without hesitation.  Then, depending on my mood, I may dig a little. I found this frame next to a neighbor’s trash can and snatched it up. Can you believe they threw it away? As they say, “one man’s/woman’s/crafter’s trash is another man’s treasure”. This upcycled frame turned into some pretty craft paint storage for my craft room.

Here is the frame BEFORE. I placed the frame on a large tarp to paint it.

Trash to Treasure Frame

Cleaning the frame was a must because it was pretty dirty.  You can do this by using lightly soaped water and a cloth. Make sure it dries completely. If necessary, you can sand any parts that are blemished. Look out for sharp ones that may stick out and sand them down. I recommend starting with a fine grit first.

I ended up using paint with primer that I already had. There were some blemishes but I didn’t mind them. There was also a little gap in one of the corners but I didn’t mind that either. Anyway, I skipped sanding the frame and went straight for the paint plus primer with a bristle brush. I painted two coats.

Be sure to check out my article for when and how to use primer for DIY painting projects and furniture makeovers. It comes in handy for trash to treasure things like this.

White Painted Frame

I hung the frame in my craft room. Inside it, I hung four small wire baskets I found in the dollar bins at Target.  It doubled as craft storage as well as artwork! I use it to store and organize my craft paint by type.  The baskets are arranged by glass paint, satin paint, pearl paint, metallic and glitter paint, and chalkboard paint. Here is what it looked like in my old craft room.
