Tips for Decorating Your Outdoor Space for Fall

Decorating Your Outdoor Space for Entertaining During Cold Weather Months and Using the Rule of Threes

This article and video, Tips for Decorating Your Outdoor Space for Fall, was sponsored by System Pavers. All opinions are 100% my own.

I had the honor of taking over System Pavers here in Santa Ana California to share some tips about decorating your outdoor space.  This fall season it’s all about bringing the indoors out and creating a comfy, warm, and festive living space outside.

Here’s a video of my experience in their beautiful showroom.

Decorating an Outdoor Table for Entertaining

Lucky for us here in SoCal, the fall weather is very mild which makes entertaining in your backyard easy.  I have a few tips for setting your table top whether you are having a small intimate gathering with friends or cooking a holiday feast for your entire family.

Having a fall centerpiece on your dining table is a great way to create a cozy autumn feel, especially when you are entertaining.  You want to make your table beautiful, but at the same time it needs to be functional when it’s time to serve food.

Tip #1: Lay a plaid blanket folded in thirds or quarters lengthwise and use it as a table runner. When it’s time to eat, you can easily remove it and fold it over the back of a dining chair.

Tip #2: When it comes to the centerpiece, decorate it on a tray or mirror.  This way, when dinner is served the entire centerpiece can be lifted and moved to another location. It doubles as another décor accent for a side table, coffee table, or the hearth of an outdoor fireplace.

The Rule of Threes

With the chilly weather that fall brings, an outdoor fireplace brings warmth and beauty on its own. BUT to make it EXTRA cozy, I like to follow the “rule of threes” to anchor each side of the hearth.

What is the Rule of Threes?

In general, odd numbers create interest. It’s visually appealing because it forces your eye to move around a group creating visual depth, and ultimately satisfaction.

Decorating with the Rule of Threes

Groupings of three specifically are said to be more memorable and effective. This rule of thumb is a good one to remember because it goes with all things decorating like hanging artwork, creating vignettes, and even arranging patio furniture. For example, you can anchor a mantel with two grouping of three items.  Whether it’d be pumpkins, lanterns, or throw pillows, placing three items together is key.

Make the Seating Area Extra Inviting

During the cooler weather, bring out extra pillows and throws in mixed fabrics and fall hues for your guest to set out on a cushioned sofa.  Remember that natural colors always work well for fall.

I hope you enjoyed my simple tips for decorating your outdoor space for fall.  I want to say a special thank you to the System Pavers team for allowing me to take over their amazing showroom to show you how easy it REALLY is to create a warm and inviting outdoor space for fall and bring the indoors out.
