How to Make Sun Headbands
All the materials used here were purchased at Hobby Lobby. You can make the rays any size you wish. The measurements below show both headbands used for the sun costume and the rainbow costume. Hot glue is the best time of glue to use to make these.
Materials:
- Plastic Headband
- Smooth Foam Half Ball (4.3” X 2.3”)
- Yellow Paint
- Paint Brush
- Yellow and Orange Foam Sheets
- Hot Glue and Glue Gun
Instructions:
- Paint the foam half balls yellow.
- Using the bottom of the foam half ball as a guide, trace a circle onto the yellow foam. Glue the circle to the bottom of the painted foam half ball.
- Cut out the rays using the measurements below.
- Hot glue the rays onto the center of the ball as shown.
- Glue the sun onto the headband with hot glue.
The measurements below are approximate. As mentioned, they don’t have to be perfect. We cut these out by “eyeballing” what would look best.

- 8 Orange 2.5” X 3/4”
Sun Costume Headband Measurements
- 12 Yellow 5.5” X 3/4”

How to Make a Cardboard Microphone
For the Weatherman costume, dad wore a suit and tie and carried this DIY Weather Channel microphone. You don’t need a full suit, slacks and a button up or even just a polo shirt works as well.
Watch this fun Instagram Reel on how to make this microphone.
Materials:
- Paper Towel Tube
- Cardboard/Shipping Box
- 2.8” Smooth Foam Ball
- Scissors
- Hot Glue and Glue Gun
- Black Paint
- Silver Paint
- Paint Brush
- Bristle Brush
- Card stock
- Glue stick
Instructions:
- Cut out 2” wide strips of cardboard. Hot glue it around about ¾ up on the cardboard tube.
- Cut a 3” X 12” Strip of cardboard to make the square for the Weather Channel logo. It should be thick enough to fit the next step. Trim or add as needed.
- Fold the 3” X 12” Strip into equal four sides creating a square. Wrap it around the strips of cardboard.
- Hot glue the foam ball to the top of the microphone.
- Paint the entire thing black.
- Using a bristle brush, use silver paint (remove excess) and dab it all over the microphone ball.
- Google and save the Weather Channel logo and resize it to just under 3” X 3”. Print four logos. We used card stock. Glue each logo onto the four sides.
