Cousin It DIY Trick or Treat Pail
Plastic Pumpkin Turned Cousin It DIY Trick or Treat Pail
My daughter loves choosing our Halloween costumes and this year she wanted us to be the Addams Family. I am Morticia, my husband is Gomez, and our other daughter will be baby Pubert. She, of course, wants to be Wednesday Addams. To go with her costume, I decided to turn her plastic trick or treat pumpkin into Cousin It. Here is how I made this adorable Cousin It DIY Trick or Treat Pail.
Time: One Hour

- Plastic Trick or Treat Pumpkin
- Rope
- Tan Yarn
- Light Colored Duct Tape
- Masking Tape
- Black Top Hat
- Black Sunglasses
- Scissors
- Hot Glue and Glue Gun
Cousin It DIY Trick or Treat Pail Instructions:
Cut off the existing black plastic handle on the pumpkin. Replace it with rope. Measure it, depending on the height of your child.
Next, unwind the spool of yarn around a chair back several times. Pull it off and cut only one end.
Lay out a piece of duct tape about 10” long. Lay the looped end of the yarn onto the duct tape.
Tape it around the mid-section of the pumpkin.
Repeat these steps and do the other side.
It will look like this:
Note: I happen to have blue duct tape, so that’s what I used. I would recommend choosing a light colored duct tape so that it doesn’t show through the yarn.
Repeat the steps above again, but in shorter strips of duct tape. This time, tape them around the rim of the pail.
Next, lift up the first layer and cover the face with masking tape. This will help hide the face behind the yarn. For mine, I also covered the blue duct tape with masking tape.
Cut the top off of the top hat (I found this one at Goodwill for $5). Place it on top of the pumpkin allowing the rope to come through. It will fit snuggly on the pumpkin. Use duct tape to tape the hat to the pumpkin as shown.
Gently bend a pair of plastic sunglasses and hot glue the arms underneath the hat. (I had an old pair of 4th of July glasses and painted them black). Here is a photo of the top of the pail.
Here are a few after photos of this Cousin It DIY Trick or Treat Pail.

Thank you, Kari!!
Thank you so much for the inspiration! My daughter has been obsessing over the Addams Family since watching the old shows this summer and wanted to be Wednesday Addams. We all dressed up as the Addams Family (only difference was that our baby was Pugsley) and had to have a Cousin It!! I would love to share a pic with you. Thanks again!
That’s awesome, Kendra! I would love to see you all. Also, would mind if I posted it on my Facebook page? My email address is dwulf@diyinspired.com.
Absolutely love this!
How many spools of yarn did you end up using if I may ask? 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing!

Hi Dinah, you have inspired me to really delve into making my son’s costume this Halloween. He’s hoping to be the Fortnite cube. Any suggestions or ideas for the lighting and glow effect?
Cool! What about painting the cube purple/blue and then painting glow in the dark paint over it. Then, tape battery operated black lights to the corners to make it glow at night.
Definitely the Itt bag!
I made a cousin It halloween pale last weekend. I have not finished putting the hat and sunglasses on yet. I am dressing as Wednesday Adams for my 6 year old nephews halloween themed bday party this weekend. Cousin It will be my side-kick since my husband can’t make it with me. I bought a big patch of nude/blonde yarn at walmart for about $6 and a pumpkin pale for $1 and white ducktape and $1 sunglasses from Dollar Tree totaling $11 to make… It was fun! I’m not sure if my nephew knows who the Adam’s family is, but he instructed me that i had dress in a scary costume… coming from a almost 6 year old…. that could me a lot of things. I dont want to be too scary… lol
I’m so glad you like it and tried it! I bet it’ll be a hit. When we went trick or treating with this costume, all the parents loved it even though the kids didn’t really know who it was!
Glad to have a smaller version of Cousin It. Very cute.
That cousin it pumpkin bucket is super cute. Not to mention your daughters outfit is adorable. Thank you for your inspiration.
