Crazy Hair Day Ideas for Boys and Girls and How to Do It

There are a ton of fun and creative crazy hair day styles online, but I found it difficult to find out how to execute some of them. So, I dug deep and tested some things out myself and figured out some fun crazy hair ideas for boys and girls.

I also provided helpful affiliate links in case you need to buy any of my recommended products.

Crazy Hair Ideas for Boys (or girls with short hair)

The following ideas use the same things: 1) hair gel and/or hairspray, 2) washable Elmer’s glue (for really short hair) or glue and barrettes (for longer hair), and 3) colored hair spray.

Big Wave Surfer Hair

Directions: This style is great for boys with longer short hair. Style hair in the shape of a wave using hairspray and hair gel. Spray the hair with blue colored hair spray. Use an industrial glue like E6000 to glue a toy surfer onto a clip or barrette.  Keep in mind that a strong glue like this needs to dry for 24 hours. You can use hot glue; however, I find that it doesn’t hold as well to metal and can fall off.

Creepy Bug Hair or Eyeball Hair

Directions: This crazy hair idea for boys is also great for really short hair. You can use plastic spiders and bugs or wiggly eyeballs. Whichever you choose, make sure it is light weight.  Style the hair and spray it with colored hair spray of choice. Use a small amount of washable Elmer’s glue to attach each item.  Keep in mind that this style will require a bit of washing to get all the glue out, but it won’t damage the hair.

Break Dancer idea

I have a detailed tutorial for this one here. What is great about this one is that you can use ANY image you want to. Just use Google images to search for what you want, print it on cardstock, cut it out, and glue it to a bobby pin or barrette. I even cut out my daughter’s face to put on the break dancers face!

Crazy Hair Ideas for Girls (or boys with long hair)

Long hair crazy hair styles are a little more involved. Here are some fun ideas and how to execute them.

Cherry Hair

I can’t take credit for this one! This was all my 8 YO’s crazy hair day idea.

You Will Need

  • Red Temporary Hair Spray Color
  • 2 Hair Ties
  • Bobby Pins
  • Green Pipe Cleaner
  • Green Paper
  • Marker

Directions: First, style the hair in two high buns. Spray each bun with red temporary hair color. Secure with bobby pins as needed. Next, bend and fold green pipe cleaner into cherry stems and poke them in the center of each bun. Pin with bobby pins. Cut out a leaf with green paper and draw the leaf veins. Lastly, tape or glue the leaf to the stem.

Here is a close up.

Pouring Soda Hair

This is a popular one and always a hit and as a bonus is really quick and easy to do.

You Will Need

  • Empty plastic soda bottle
  • Small paper or plastic cup
  • Hair Tie
  • Barrette
  • Utility Knife

Directions: Style the hair into a high pony tail. Cut a slit on the bottom side of the soda bottle. Make sure the front label is facing forward and the slit is on the bottom. Twist the pony tail and slide it through the slit. Feed the hair through the hole of the bottle. Use a long hair clip to clip the cup to the side of the bed attaching it to the hair.

Yogurt Crazy Hair

This was our most recent crazy hairstyle, but it was REALLY easy. This works for yogurt and ice cream cups. You can save one from Baskin Robbins or Yogurtland or you can use a left-over paper party cup too.

You Will Need

  • Paper Cup and Plastic Spoon
  • E6000
  • Hair Tie
  • Colorful Bows and Barrettes

Directions: Cut an “X” in the bottom of the cup with a utility knife. Using a strong glue, glue a plastic spoon to the side. Again, hot glue works for about a second. Haha! I recommend E6000. Style the hair in a high ponytail. Pull the ponytail through the “X” and drape over the cup. Place small colorful barrettes all over the ponytail for “toppings”.

Another option is to make your own toppings barrettes like the Break Dancer hair idea above. Simply look for images of your kids favorite toppings, print and cut them out and glue them to barrettes. Here is an example, in which you can watch an Instagram Reel DIY Video. For this one I used a DIY pompom hair tie.

Crazy Hair Day Yogurt Cup

Doughnut and Coffee Hair

You Will Need

  • Paper Plate
  • Empty Paper Coffee Cup
  • Felt
  • Beads
  • Scissors

Directions: Style the hair in a high ponytail. Cut an “X” on the bottom of the paper plate towards one side to leave room for the paper cup. Feed the ponytail through the “X” and style the hair and style in a bun using bobby pins. Glue the paper cup onto the plate. You can even add a napkin!

You can stop there, or you can make the doughnut icing out of felt and beads for sprinkles.

Popcorn Crazy Hair

I have a full tutorial for this one as well. You can find it here. This one was a hit. As far as trouble shooting goes on this one, make sure to glue each cotton ball to one another so they don’t fall out being careful not to glue the hair.

I hope you like these crazy hair ideas for boys and girls!
